Summary in English

Pusarla Venkata Sindhu was born in 1995 to volleyball players P. V. Ramana and P. Vijaya. Inspired by Pullela Gopichand's All England Championship win in 2001, she began playing badminton at the age of eight. She trained first under Mehboob Ali in Secunderabad and later at Gopichand's academy.

She won many national titles as a junior and a gold medal at the National School Games. Her first international medal was a bronze at the 2009 Sub-Junior Asian Badminton Championships in Colombo. In 2013 she became India's first medallist in women's singles at the World Championships, and in 2014 the first Indian to win back-to-back World Championship medals.

At the 2016 Rio Olympics she reached the final by beating Nozomi Okuhara of Japan and won the silver medal, losing to Spain's Carolina Marin, whom she later beat in the 2017 India Open. She received the Arjuna Award, the Padma Shri (2015) and the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna (2016). Gopichand says her greatest strength is her attitude and never-say-die spirit.
