Summary in English
On 10 April 1912, the Titanic, the largest luxury ship in the world, set out on her maiden voyage from Southampton to New York with more than two thousand people. She was like a floating town, as tall as a fifteen-storey building, with grand staircases, shops and swimming pools. Everyone believed she could never sink, so she carried only a few lifeboats.
At 11.40 p.m. on 14 April, a lookout saw a huge iceberg ahead. Captain Smith tried to turn the ship, but her side scraped the iceberg, which cut holes in it. Water poured in. The Titanic sent messages for help. The nearby ship California did not hear them because her radio was off; the Carpathia heard, but was more than three hours away. There was room in the lifeboats for only a few hundred people.
At 2.20 a.m. on 15 April, the Titanic sank. About fifteen hundred people drowned, including Captain Smith. The Carpathia saved about seven hundred people from the lifeboats. In 1913 new rules required enough lifeboats for everyone and radios working day and night. The wreck was found in 1985, about 4000 metres deep, and in 1998 James Cameron made a famous film about it.
(Summary in Marathi)
Theme and Message (मध्यवर्ती कल्पना)
Overconfidence can lead to disaster; safety must never be ignored, however strong or grand something seems.

On the night of 14 April 1912, the sea was calm and most passengers were asleep. Captain Smith knew there were icebergs nearby, so he posted a lookout. At 11.40 p.m. the lookout saw a huge iceberg ahead. The captain tried to turn the ship, but it turned too slowly. The iceberg scraped the side and cut holes in it. Water poured into the lower decks. The ‘unsinkable’ ship began to sink. At 12.15 a.m. the captain radioed for help and ordered the crew to wake everyone. The California, only twenty miles away, did not hear because its radio was off. The Carpathia heard but was far away. There were life-boats for only a few hundred people. At 2.20 a.m. the Titanic sank, and about fifteen hundred people died. The Carpathia arrived at 3.40 a.m. and saved seven hundred people from the life-boats. It was too late to save the others.
