- Unit: 3
Summary in English
Troy was a rich trading city with fertile land, protected by a strong, broad wall. The war began when Paris, a prince of Troy, persuaded Helen, wife of the Greek king Menelaus, to elope with him. The Greeks attacked Troy, and the siege lasted ten years. Many heroes died: Hector was killed by Achilles, Achilles by a poisoned arrow in his heel, and later Paris too.
At last, the cunning Odysseus planned a trick. The Greeks built a huge wooden horse, hid their best fighters inside, burnt their tents and pretended to sail away. One Greek stayed behind and told the Trojans a false story: the horse was an offering to the sea-god, made too big so that the Trojans could not take it inside and get its luck.
Ignoring their priest's warning, the excited Trojans broke down part of their wall and dragged the horse in. After a day of celebration they slept soundly. At night the Greek ships returned, the soldiers climbed out of the horse and opened the gates, and Troy was burnt. King Priam and his sons were killed. Menelaus forgave Helen and took her home.
(Summary in Marathi)
Theme and Message (मध्यवर्ती कल्पना)
Cleverness can achieve what force cannot, and careless overconfidence can destroy even the strongest city.
