- Unit: 4
Summary in English
Sayed Haider Raza was a renowned Indian painter. His paintings are abstract: they show no lifelike figures but simple geometric shapes, striking colours (especially blue and orange) and balanced compositions that come from his inner mind and Indian philosophy. Later, the 'bindu' or point became the centre of his work.
Born in a small village in Madhya Pradesh, Raza studied art in Nagpur and at the J. J. School of Art in Mumbai, and then in France, where he settled. He received all three Padma awards and died in 2016 at the age of 94.
Gond art is a tribal art developed and preserved by the Gond people of Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Odisha. It began as pictures on the earthen walls of houses, with colours made from soil, plant juice, leaves, flowers, coal and cow-dung. The pictures are filled with designs of dots, lines and curves, and the art is passed from generation to generation.
(Summary in Marathi)
Theme and Message (मध्यवर्ती कल्पना)
Art is a way to express deep thought and preserve culture, whether it is a modern abstract painting or a traditional folk art.
