Future Tense in English Grammar (भविष्यकाळ) – A Complete Bilingual Guide
Learn how to talk about the future using “will”, “going to” and Future Continuous, with clear rules, Marathi meanings and example sentences.
What is Future Tense? Future Tense is used to talk about actions or events that have not yet happened but are expected to happen after the present moment.
(इंग्रजी व्याकरणात, जी क्रिया अद्याप घडलेली नाही पण वर्तमानकाळानंतर घडणार आहे, ती दाखवण्यासाठी ‘भविष्यकाळ’ वापरला जातो.)
1. Future Simple: Will (साधा भविष्यकाळ)
English Rule: Use Subject + will + V1 for predictions, promises, and decisions made at the moment of speaking.
मराठी नियम: भविष्याबद्दलचा अंदाज, वचन, किंवा बोलतानाच घेतलेल्या निर्णयासाठी Subject + will + V1 वापरतात.
Examples (उदाहरणे):
- Prediction: It will rain tomorrow.
- Promise: I will help you with your homework.
- Instant decision: The phone is ringing — I will answer it.
Example Sentence: She will join the new school next month.
(ती पुढच्या महिन्यात नवीन शाळेत दाखल होईल.)
2. Future with “Going to” (नियोजित भविष्यकाळ)
English Rule: Use am/is/are + going to + V1 for plans or intentions decided before the moment of speaking, or for predictions based on present evidence.
मराठी नियम: बोलण्यापूर्वीच ठरवलेल्या योजनेसाठी किंवा सध्याच्या परिस्थितीवरून केलेल्या अंदाजासाठी am/is/are + going to + V1 वापरतात.
Examples (उदाहरणे):
- Planned: We are going to visit Pune next week.
- Evidence-based: Look at those clouds — it is going to rain.
Example Sentence: He is going to start a new job on Monday.

3. Future Continuous (चालू भविष्यकाळ)
English Rule: Use will be + V-ing for an action that will be in progress at a specific time in the future.
मराठी नियम: भविष्यातील एका विशिष्ट वेळी चालू असणाऱ्या क्रियेसाठी will be + V-ing वापरतात.
Examples (उदाहरणे):
- This time tomorrow, I will be flying to Delhi.
- They will be waiting for us at the station at 6 pm.
Example Sentence: At 8 o’clock tonight, we will be watching the match.
(आज रात्री ८ वाजता आपण सामना बघत असू.)
Common Mistake for Marathi Speakers (मराठी भाषिकांची सामान्य चूक)
Marathi speakers often mix the two future forms and say “I will going to market”. Only one future form should be used at a time: either “I will go to the market” or “I am going to go to the market.”
(अनेकजण “will” आणि “going to” हे दोन्ही एकत्र वापरून चुकीने “I will going to market” असे म्हणतात. यापैकी फक्त एकच रूप वापरावे: “I will go to the market” किंवा “I am going to go to the market.”)
