Reading Comprehension Strategies for Maharashtra Board English Exams

Reading comprehension scares students because it feels unpredictable. But examiners follow a pattern. Learn the pattern, score higher.

मराठीत समजून घ्या: उताऱ्यावरील प्रश्न (Reading Comprehension)

However, As a result

What Examiners Actually Test

Only 4 types of comprehension questions exist: (1) Direct/Literal—”What did the character do?”, (2) Inference—”Why did they do that?”, (3) Vocabulary—”What does the word mean?”, (4) Opinion/Analysis—”Was the ending fair?” Most SSC exams focus on types 1 and 2.

5-Step Comprehension Strategy

Step 1: Skim the Entire Passage Get the main idea. Ask: What’s this about? Is it a story, opinion, report? Step 2: Read the Questions First Read what’s being asked before reading deeply. You’ll know what to look for. Step 3: Read the Passage Carefully Underline key phrases. Mark transitions like “However”, “As a result”, “Meanwhile”. Step 4: Answer Direct Questions Questions like “What color was the house?” have answers stated directly. Find them. Step 5: For Inference, Use Clues + Logic Inferences ask what’s implied, not stated. Use passage clues plus common sense. Example: Passage says “Ravi studied for hours, his coffee was cold, his eyes were heavy.” Inference: He was tired (clues: studying, heavy eyes).

Common Mistakes

Don’t bring outside knowledge. Answer from the passage only. Pay attention to negatives: “does not believe”, “never”. Confirm who did what in stories with multiple people. Don’t overthink simple questions.

Vocabulary in Context

When defining a word, look at surrounding sentences. “The painting was restored to its original beauty.” In context, “restored” means “brought back to good condition”, not just “returned”. Use surrounding words to narrow meaning.

Worked Example: A Practice Passage

Read this short passage, then see how each question type is answered.

Every summer, the small village of Shirgaon faced a water shortage. The old well dried up by April, and women walked three kilometres to fetch water. In 2019, a group of students from the village school decided to act. With help from their teacher, they built small stone bunds on the hillside to stop rainwater from rushing away. They also persuaded farmers to dig farm ponds. The next monsoon brought only average rain, but the well did not dry up the following summer. Today Shirgaon has water all year round, and three nearby villages are copying the students’ model.

A1. True or False: The students built the bunds without any adult help.
Answer: False. Their teacher helped them. (Direct question: the answer is stated in the passage.)

A2. Why did the well not dry up the next summer?
Answer: The stone bunds and farm ponds held the rainwater, so more water soaked into the ground and reached the well. (Inference: the passage gives the clues, you join them.)

A3. Find the word from the passage that means “convinced”.
Answer: persuaded. (Vocabulary in context.)

A4. What can students in your area do to save water?
Answer: We can fix leaking taps at school, collect rainwater from the roof and remind our families not to leave taps running. (Personal response: use your own ideas, not lines from the passage.)

Answer-Writing Rules That Save Marks

  • Write full sentences unless the question asks for a single word.
  • Give exactly the number of points the question asks for, no fewer.
  • For personal-response questions, write your own ideas in 2 to 3 sentences. Do not copy the passage.
  • For true/false questions, correct the false statement in a few words. It shows you understood.
  • Keep the tense of the passage in your answers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I read the questions or the passage first?

Skim the passage once for the main idea, then read the questions, then read the passage carefully. This way you know exactly what to look for.

How much time should one passage take?

About 12 to 15 minutes, including checking. If one question is stuck, move on and come back to it.

उत्तरे स्वतःच्या शब्दांत लिहावीत का?

थेट प्रश्नांसाठी उताऱ्यातील शब्द वापरले तरी चालतात. पण अनुमानाचे आणि स्वतःचे मत विचारणारे प्रश्न स्वतःच्या शब्दांतच लिहा.

Keep practising

Strong vocabulary makes every passage easier. Try the vocabulary practice set (synonyms, antonyms and meaning in context), and look up any unknown word with the Word Analyzer. More worksheets are in the free SSC English study bundle.
