Lesson 11: Conditionals (जर-तर वाक्ये)

Conditional Sentences in English Grammar (जर-तर वाक्ये) – A Complete Bilingual Guide

Learn the Zero, First, Second and Third Conditionals, with clear rules, Marathi meanings and example sentences.

What are Conditional Sentences? Conditional sentences have two parts: an “if” clause showing a condition, and a main clause showing the result. English has four main types, each used for a different kind of condition.

1. Zero Conditional (शून्य जर-तर वाक्य)

English Rule: If + Present Simple, Present Simple. Used for general truths and scientific facts that are always true.

  • If you heat ice, it melts.
  • If it rains, the ground gets wet.

Example Sentence: If you mix red and blue, you get purple.

2. First Conditional (पहिले जर-तर वाक्य)

English Rule: If + Present Simple, will + V1. Used for real and possible situations in the future.

  • If it rains, I will stay home.
  • If you study hard, you will pass the exam.

Example Sentence: If you come early, we will catch the bus.

3. Second Conditional (दुसरे जर-तर वाक्य)

English Rule: If + Past Simple, would + V1. Used for unreal or hypothetical situations in the present or future.

  • If I had a car, I would drive to work.
  • If she won the lottery, she would travel the world.

Example Sentence: If I were you, I would apologize.

4. Third Conditional (तिसरे जर-तर वाक्य)

English Rule: If + Past Perfect, would have + V3. Used for unreal situations in the past — things that did not actually happen.

मराठी नियम: If + पूर्ण भूतकाळ, would have + V3.

  • If I had studied harder, I would have passed the exam.
  • If she had left earlier, she would have caught the train.

Example Sentence: If it had not rained, we would have gone for a picnic.

Common Mistake for Marathi Speakers

Marathi speakers often use “will” in the if-clause itself and say “If it will rain, I will stay home”. The if-clause of a First Conditional always uses Present Simple, never “will”. The correct form is “If it rains, I will stay home.”

(मराठीत अनेकजण if-वाक्यातही चुकीने “will” वापरून “If it will rain, I will stay home” असे म्हणतात. योग्य वाक्य आहे: “If it rains, I will stay home.”)

Summary Table: The Four Conditionals (तक्ता)

Type Structure Used For
Zero If + present, present General truths, facts
First If + present, will + V1 Real future possibility
Second If + past, would + V1 Unreal present/future
Third If + past perfect, would have + V3 Unreal past
