Lesson 6: Past Tense in English Grammar (भूतकाळ)

Past Tense in English Grammar (भूतकाळ) – A Complete Bilingual Guide

Learn the 3 forms of Past Tense — Simple, Continuous and Perfect — with clear rules, Marathi meanings and example sentences.

What is Past Tense? Past Tense is used to talk about actions or events that have already happened, before the present moment.
(इंग्रजी व्याकरणात, जी क्रिया आधीच घडून गेलेली आहे — वर्तमानकाळापूर्वी — ती दाखवण्यासाठी ‘भूतकाळ’ वापरला जातो.)

1. Past Simple (साधा भूतकाळ)

English Rule: Use Subject + V2 (past form of the verb) for actions that were completed at a definite time in the past. Regular verbs add “-ed” (played, watched); irregular verbs change form (went, ate, saw).

मराठी नियम: भूतकाळात पूर्ण झालेल्या क्रियेसाठी क्रियापदाचे दुसरे रूप (V2) वापरतात. नियमित क्रियापदांना “-ed” जोडतात (played, watched); अनियमित क्रियापदांचे रूप बदलते (went, ate, saw).

Examples (उदाहरणे):

  • Affirmative: She played cricket yesterday.
  • Negative: She did not play cricket yesterday.
  • Question: Did she play cricket yesterday?

Example Sentence: I visited my grandmother last Sunday.
(मी गेल्या रविवारी माझ्या आजीला भेटायला गेलो.)

2. Past Continuous (चालू भूतकाळ)

English Rule: Use was/were + V-ing for an action that was in progress at a specific moment in the past, often interrupted by another action.

मराठी नियम: भूतकाळातील एका विशिष्ट क्षणी चालू असलेल्या क्रियेसाठी was/were + V-ing वापरतात, बहुतेकवेळा दुसऱ्या क्रियेमुळे ती क्रिया मध्येच थांबते.

Examples (उदाहरणे):

  • I was reading a book when the phone rang.
  • They were playing football at 5 o’clock yesterday.

Example Sentence: She was cooking dinner when I reached home.
(मी घरी पोहोचलो तेव्हा ती जेवण बनवत होती.)

3. Past Perfect (पूर्ण भूतकाळ)

English Rule: Use had + V3 (past participle) for an action that was completed before another action or time in the past.

मराठी नियम: भूतकाळातील दुसऱ्या क्रियेपूर्वी किंवा वेळेपूर्वी पूर्ण झालेल्या क्रियेसाठी had + V3 (भूतकालवाचक कृदंत) वापरतात.

Examples (उदाहरणे):

  • The train had left before we reached the station.
  • She had finished her homework before dinner.

Example Sentence: By the time he arrived, the movie had already started.
(तो पोहोचेपर्यंत चित्रपट आधीच सुरू झाला होता.)

Common Mistake for Marathi Speakers (मराठी भाषिकांची सामान्य चूक)

Marathi speakers often say “I didn’t went to school” by adding the past form of the verb after “didn’t.” The correct form is “I didn’t go to school” — after did/didn’t, always use the base form (V1) of the verb, not V2.

(मराठीत नकारार्थी वाक्य तयार करताना अनेकजण चुकीने “didn’t” नंतरही क्रियापदाचे भूतकाळी रूप (went) वापरतात — “I didn’t went.” योग्य वाक्य आहे: “I didn’t go to school.” did/didn’t नंतर नेहमी क्रियापदाचे पहिले रूप (V1) वापरावे, दुसरे रूप (V2) नाही.)

Summary Table: Past Tense Forms (तक्ता)

Tense Structure Used For Example
Past Simple Subject + V2 Completed action, definite time She played cricket.
Past Continuous was/were + V-ing Action in progress at a past moment I was reading.
Past Perfect had + V3 Action completed before another past action The train had left.
